What We Believe

Our Core Beliefs

Bergen United Methodist Church has based our core beliefs on the foundational truths taught in the bible. All of our teaching and ministry is rooting in and flows out of these biblical doctrines.

God. We confess belief in the triune god- the Father creator of all that is, the Son our redeemer, and the Holy Spirit who sustains us.

Revelation. God has revealed himself to us through his son, Jesus Christ, who is the visible image of the invisible God, the holy scriptures, and through all of creation itself.

Humankind. As sinful creatures, we have fallen short of the glory of God. We have become estranged from God, wounded ourselves and one another, and wreaked havoc throughout the natural order. We stand in need of redemption.

The Fall. When Adam and Eve chose not obey God, they ceased to be what they were made to be and became distorted images of God. This caused them to fall out of fellowship with God and that separation fractured all of creation. This fracture not only effected Adam and Eve, but has rippled all through time to our current day.

Salvation. We hold in common with all Christians a faith in the mystery of salvation in and through Jesus Christ. Through faith in Jesus Christ we are forgiven, reconciled to God, and transformed as those who are part of God’s chosen people.

The Church. The Church is meant to be the hands and feet of Christ, sent into the world to glorify God, and spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. We affirm the general ministry of all baptized Christians who share responsibility for building up the church and reaching out in mission and service to the world.

Resurrection. Through Christ’s death and resurrection the powers of sin and death have been broken over us. God offers us, by grace, the gift of a life lived with Him now and eternally. This gift is given to all who follow Christ, by faith , as their Lord and Savior.

Worship. Worship is at the center of Christian life. All worship begins with the acknowledgement that our God is great. He is great because He created the world. He is great because He gave us His Son, Jesus Christ. Further, through worship we recognize and confess that Christ died for us. Worship brings us into the very presence of God and in response we offer our sacrifice of praise in song, in prayer, and in our lives.
